St Paul's Making greater use of LEVAS II hymnal
To honor the abiding and rich tradition of the African-American spiritual, the St. Paul’s choir has been drawing hymnody and service music regularly from Lift Every Voice and Sing II (LEVAS II). This popular collection of 280 musical pieces (from both the African-American and gospel traditions) has been compiled under the supervision of the Office of Black Ministries of the Episcopal Church. It includes service music and several Psalm settings, in addition to spirituals, gospel songs, and well-known hymnody from many faith traditions. Dr. Horace Clarence Boyer (1935-2009) was the General Editor of Lift Every Voice and Sing II; he was known as a dynamic workshop leader and foremost scholar on African-American hymnody.
