Jon Shaw for the ACC

Good morning. My name is Jon Shaw. I and my family have been part of this wonderful St. Paul’s community for over 40 years and have raised our 4 children here.

As a musician, I was asked to speak to the value of music in our church budget, and as you can imagine, this is an area which is near and dear to my heart.
Speaking to both the 8:00 and 10:30 services gave me a chance to reflect on just what music is in our church. I don’t really consider the early service without music, as the spoken word is also music in its own way. When we come together to recite our liturgy collectively, we instinctively try to match pitch with our neighbors, and naturally gravitate to the exact inflection of spoken delivery in lilt, spacing and emphasis, thus – our natural common ground. Speaking and singing arise from the same place, so I look upon us all as musicians of the church, and as musicians we all get to participate all the time.
St. Paul’s stands geographically in the center of Greenville, its heartbeat, and is bordered north by the river, west by the courthouse and south by the university, none of which is going anywhere, hence we stand in a unique position to be a beacon for the dignity of our extended community.
l’Il end by expressing my gratitude for the good fortune of being able to gather and worship amongst all my fellow musicians, and that includes us all, who support in time and resources that which is of lasting value in our world.
Thank you
