A Spiritual Tune Up

Well, summertime is here! The heat index is rising daily, and vacation time is calling. During this season, things begin to slow down a bit at St. Paul’s and around town – not much hustle and bustle, no serious trouble finding parking spaces downtown, and no football or basketball games to attend – it’s a time to exhale (if only for a little while). There is something beautiful about slowing down, isn’t there? When we slow our bodies down from all the busy daily activities, not only does the body recover, but we also have an opportunity to slow the mind down, reflect on our relationship with God and allow our spirits to recover. I personally find that it is a great season to quiet the mind and allow

God to spiritually tune me up so I can healthily move forward in life when the “normal” routine resumes in the Fall.

Slowing down and allowing God to tune us up takes determination, discipline, and courage – why courage? Because sometimes we may not like some of what we discover about ourselves in the tune-up process. Yet, In Psalm 139:23-24, the psalmist cries out “Search me, God, and know my heart: test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” It’s nice to know that God will assist us in self-examination and will gently show us to us. The key words and phrases in this Psalm penetrate the soul: “Search me,” “know my heart,” “test me,” “know my anxious thoughts,” “see if there is any offensive way in me,” and “lead me…” Every machine needs a tune up from time to time and the mind, body and spirit is no different. With Psalm 139 as an ultimate guide, I urge you to seize the moment this summer and slow down, allow God to search you and tune you up.

Amen.
